Tucked in the middle of the Jackson and Franklin Street block on Milwaukee Street is O’Riley & Conway’s Irish Pub. Prior to being O’Riley and Conway’s, the small building was home to Quaerna’s Tavern, initially erected on Franklin Street in 1933 just several days after Prohibition was lifted. After World War II, Oscar Quaerna reopened his tavern at 214 W Milwaukee Street. The liquor license holds the title as Janesville’s eldest, yet still active, and still property of the Quaerna family. Oscar’s grandson, Ed, and Ed’s nephew, Joe, are the current owners of O’Riley and Conway’s. Ed is a history teacher at Franklin Middle School who has history working at Quaerna’s with his father, Ed Senior. Forty-four-year-old Joe resides in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin and makes a living in the floor and tile industry. After Quaerna’s closed for renovations in 2009, the two men decided to add some Irish flare by adding tile and parquet floors but kept the tin ceiling and authentic bricks to maintain the original mood of Quaerna’s.
